regulation

Newspapers regulation body is IPSO (Independent Press Standards Organisation) . These have a code of practise that newspapers must follow. There are 16 different areas of regulation. this includes things like accuracy and privacy.
If they don't follow the codes IPSO has the power to sanction the newspapers

Tvs regulation body is OFCOM this deals with live TV and prerecorded TV. They have 10 codes which cover several areas from under 18s to elections and referendums.

IPSO regulates newspapers by people being able to file complaints. IPSO then investigate the complaints and if they adjudge the newspaper to have done something growing then IPSO can punish them with fines or force them to make a public apology for example.

OFCOM regulate TV by having a look before broadcasting sometimes. other times its after its broadcasted and then complaints may occur. They also may have watchdogs or other influential organisations or people with an impact on if it meets regulation. Live TV is scrutinised after the event.

An example of IPSO ruling is chapmen v daily mirror. The newspaper article said that the former mayor of borough of Dacorum had committed suicide. This was untrue as it was a women with the same name. The women then complained to IPSO on the grounds of accuracy. the newspaper sent her a apology and issued a correction on page 2 of the newspaper.

An example of OFCOM regulation is when they fined the BBC £400000 for putting on fake competitions on where the winner would be someone made up by the production staff. They where found of deceiving there audience. This came after a £50000 fine for faking a competition on blue peter.
